Paul Bonifas
Biography
Paul Bonifas was a French actor who trained at the Conservatoire de Paris while employed by the customs service. Winning the school's first prize for comedy opened the way to the Odéon Theatre in 1933 and the Comédie-Française five years later. His screen debut came in Pierre Chenal's 1935 adaptation of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. During World War II he served in the artillery and later joined the Free French in London, working for Radio Londres. In 1943 he formed The Molière Players, a troupe that staged Molière around British theaters. That company appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's short Aventure malgache (1944). Bonifas also acted in British films including The Foreman Went to France, Two Fathers, and Dead of Night. Back in France from 1946, he focused on comic theater while taking dramatic parts, and his later screen credits included Fanny (1961), Charade (1963), The Train (1964), Triple Cross (1966), and The Return of the Tall Blond Man (1974).
