Plot summary
Duke Philippe de Nevers is a popular and influential man whose cousin Philippe de Gonzague has long wanted his properties and wealth. De Gonzague hates him enough to arrange an attempt on his life. His henchmen set upon the duke, and Henri de Lagardère is beside him at that moment. The pair are hopelessly outnumbered. Lagardère cannot save his friend, so he gets away with the duke's small daughter, swearing revenge. With his old comrade Passepoil he brings the girl up in Spain. From there he returns to France again and again, hunting the men who took part in the attack.
