Plot summary
Roman legions have taken Gaul, with one small village still holding out. Asterix, his friend Obelix and their neighbors owe their resistance to a magic potion brewed by the druid Getafix, which gives whoever drinks it superhuman strength. When Roman soldiers ambush Asterix in the forest, he leaves them beaten and bruised, and their commander, Phonus Balonus, wants to know where the Gauls get their power. He orders his men to capture the druid. They seize Getafix while he is out gathering mistletoe and take him to their camp, where he refuses to divulge the secret of his potion. Asterix searches the forest for the druid.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Asterix the Gaul (1967)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo were not satisfied with the film and only reluctantly agreed to its release, but they managed to halt two planned sequels, Asterix and the Golden Sickle and Asterix and the Big Fight. Afterwards they secured a promise that they would be consulted on all later cartoon adaptations, starting with Asterix and Cleopatra.
- This is the only Asterix film that includes neither Dogmatix nor any female character, making it unique among the series' adaptations.
- In the English version of the film, the characters' names differ from the rest of the series: Getafix keeps his French name Panoramix, Vitalstatistix is called Tonabrix and the bard Cacofonix is called Stopthemusix. The changes were attributed to the film being dubbed into English before the books were translated.
