Plot summary
Illegal diamond miners work a camp near a small village in an unnamed South American country. When the authorities take the mine for the state, soldiers break up the settlement and the miners burn the army headquarters in reprisal. Reinforcements arrive and round up most of the miners. Five people get away on a riverboat: Castin, a pacifist miner; María, his deaf-mute daughter; Djin, the local madame he hopes to marry; Father Lizardi, a priest; and Shark, an adventurer the police have arrested over a bank robbery in a nearby town. With the army after them, the group heads into the jungle.
