Plot summary
Fifth child of an impoverished nobleman in the Poitou marshlands, Angélique de Sancé de Monteloup returns from a convent at seventeen to find herself betrothed to Jeoffrey de Peyrac, Lord of Toulouse, a wealthy count twelve years her senior, lame, scarred and said to be a sorcerer; his fortune comes from mining techniques he learned in the East. For her family's sake she agrees to the match but refuses her husband's advances, and he does not press his claim, preferring to win her heart. Over the months she discovers his gifts as a scientist, musician and philosopher and falls in love with him. His way of life stirs the ambition of the Archbishop of Toulouse and the envy of the young king, Louis XIV.
