Plot summary
Ave Maria Mulligan owns the pharmacy her father left her in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. She calls herself the town spinster. Her mother, an Italian immigrant, sews for the town, and Ave delivers medicines to the country people, serves on the coal town's emergency response team, and directs its yearly production of Trail of the Lonesome Pine. She still knows Jack MacChesney, a miner she went to school with, and visits his mother Nan with her deliveries. When her mother dies, the will holds a photograph of her real father, who lives in Italy. Fleeta Mullins works beside her at the pharmacy, and the librarian Iva Lou Wade is her closest friend.
