James Hampton
Biography
James Hampton, an American actor, screenwriter and television director, grew up in Dallas and studied theater arts at the University of North Texas. He served in the Army, performed with the USO in Germany, worked in summer stock in Texas, and moved to New York City, where his first film role came in the short subject The Cliffdwellers. On television he played the bugler Hannibal Dobbs on F Troop from 1965 to 1967, the handyman Leroy on The Doris Day Show, and appeared on Gunsmoke, and he also guest-starred on The Rockford Files. His film credits included Caretaker in The Longest Yard (1974), which brought him a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer, Howard Clemmons in Hawmps! (1976), Harold Howard in Teen Wolf (1985) and Teen Wolf Too (1987), plus Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach (1988), Hangar 18 (1980), and Sling Blade (1996). Hampton died in 2021.
