Plot summary
Solar flares have killed most of humanity, and the survivors live in safe cities, rebuilding with humanoid Pilgrim robots built by the ROC corporation. The Pilgrims follow two fixed protocols: they cannot harm life, and they cannot alter themselves or other robots. Jacq Vaucan works as an insurance investigator for ROC. When a police officer, Sean Wallace, shoots a robot he says was modifying itself, Jacq is assigned the case, and he comes to believe a clocksmith is overriding the second protocol. Jacq wants a transfer to a city on the coast, away from the decaying city where his pregnant wife Rachel would raise their child, and his boss Robert Bold promises to arrange it if Jacq brings proof.
