Plot summary
In 2046, Grey Trace makes his living as an auto mechanic, and his wife Asha works for Cobalt, a company involved in human-computer augmentation. Grey asks Asha to come with him when he returns a car he has repaired to Eron Keen, a renowned tech innovator, who shows them a chip named STEM designed to manage a person's motor functions. On the drive home their self-driving car malfunctions and crashes, and four men set upon them: Asha is killed and a shot to Grey's neck severs his spinal cord. Months later he lives as a quadriplegic cared for by his mother Pamela, while Detective Cortez has no leads on the attackers. After a suicide attempt, Eron persuades Grey to accept a STEM implant, which restores his movement and obliges him to keep it secret.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Principal photography began in March 2017 in Whannell's hometown of Melbourne, and the chase on the southern section of the Craigieburn bypass Hume Freeway goes the opposite direction to normal traffic flow so that it would appear to have been filmed in a left hand drive country.
- The unusual camerawork during the fight scenes was achieved by attaching a phone to Logan Marshall-Green and having the Alexa Mini camera track the gyroscope of the phone.
- Logan Marshall-Green based Grey's movement, while the character is under STEM's control, on that of the character Zenyatta in the video game Overwatch.
