Andrew Tiernan
Biography
Andrew Tiernan is a British actor and director who was born in 1965 in Ladywood, Birmingham. He started out at the Birmingham Youth Theatre and trained at the Drama Centre London. He played Piers Gaveston in Derek Jarman's Edward II (1991) and appeared in Prime Suspect. His film credits include Mr In-Between (2001), Face (1997), The Pianist, and 300 (2007), in which he portrayed Ephialtes, a role he reprised in 300: Rise of an Empire (2014). On television, he appeared in Cracker, Hornblower, The Quatermass Experiment (2005), and A Waste of Shame (2005). His theater work includes Sam Shepard's True West and Joe Penhall's The Bullet. He made his directorial debut with Dragonfly in 2015, followed by UK18 (2017) and Break Clause in 2019.

Early training
Tiernan started out at the Birmingham Youth Theatre and the Midlands Art Centre. In 1984 he went to London for a three-year acting diploma at the Drama Centre London.
Getting ready for a role
To play Ephialtes of Trachis in Zack Snyder's 300, Tiernan wore full body prosthetics that took 10 hours each day to complete.
