Plot summary

George Beard and Harold Hutchins are best friends and next-door neighbors in Piqua, Ohio, who write and draw comic books together. At Jerome Horwitz Elementary School the two pull elaborate pranks to cheer up their classmates, which puts them at odds with their principal, Benjamin Krupp. When Krupp prepares papers to place the boys in separate classes, George hypnotizes him with a 3-D Hypno-Ring they found among confiscated items, and the boys order him to become Captain Underpants, the superhero of their comics. Water turns him back into Mr. Krupp; a finger snap returns him to Captain Underpants. The school also hires a new science teacher, Professor Poopypants, who hates laughter and is sick of not being taken seriously because of his name.
