Plot summary
In wartime France, Eliane Michoud and her husband Henri run a pharmacy in a small provincial town. Henri, a professor who loves poetry, is dull and neglectful, and the couple have a teenage daughter, Justine. Eliane is attractive, but her passion has fallen dormant and she is unhappy. One evening Armand, a clerk at the pharmacy, makes a pass at her, mistaking her for Juliette, another employee. She begins an affair with him, and his demands on her grow, humiliating her and putting her family at risk.
