Biography

Thomas Hunter was an American actor associated mainly with Spaghetti Westerns, and he also worked as a Hollywood screenwriter. A Savannah, Georgia native, he studied acting under Sanford Meisner and Uta Hagen. He made his first screen appearance in a minor role in Blake Edwards's What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? (1966). Once shooting ended, an encounter with Dino De Laurentiis brought an offer to play the lead in The Hills Run Red, which steered him toward European, mostly Italian productions and occasional guest roles on American TV. Dissatisfied with that work, he established the New England Repertory Company. He also wrote two books: a 1982 end-of-the-world novel, reissued in 2014, and a 2015 memoir about his time making Spaghetti Westerns in Rome. He died in 2017.
