Anthony Steel
Biography
Anthony Steel was an English actor and singer who became a leading man in British films of the 1950s. Born in Chelsea in 1920, he served in the Second World War before deciding on an acting career. He signed a long-term contract with the Rank Organisation and was trained at its charm school, starting with small parts. His breakthrough came with The Wooden Horse (1950). Where No Vultures Fly (1951) was Britain's most popular film that year and the Royal Command Performance selection, establishing him as a box office draw. In 1952, British exhibitors ranked him fourth among British stars. He also appeared in Laughter in Paradise (1951) and Another Man's Poison (1951), supporting Bette Davis. Later credits included Winnetou: The Red Gentleman (1964) and Anzio (1968). In 1954 he had a UK hit with West of Zanzibar. He worked in television and theater, and his final role was in a 1989 pantomime, Cinderella. He died in 2001.
