Plot summary
Henry Phillips writes satirical songs and performs them in clubs, where his career has yet to take off. A veteran television producer, Jay Warren, sees Henry's set fall flat at a Los Angeles club and becomes convinced that the story of a struggling performer deserves to be told. He brings Henry to the city to build a show around it. Henry's longtime friend Jillian, a musician, and Ellen Pinsky, his manager, who means well but is not much help, stay with him through the ups and downs of Los Angeles living. Once a major network takes an interest in the project, Henry faces a question about what his jokes are for and who will be the target of them.
