Frank Sully

Biography

Frank Sully was an American film actor who appeared in more than 240 movies between 1934 and 1968. Born in St. Louis, he began in vaudeville before entering films, where he played small parts, often as tough guys. He gradually won larger roles, including Noah Joad in The Grapes of Wrath (1940). His first major part came in 1941 at Monogram Pictures, playing a truck driver posing as an athlete in Let's Go Collegiate, and The Exhibitor praised his performance. After joining Columbia Pictures in 1942, he became a busy contract player and was known as the slow-witted Matthews in the Boston Blackie mysteries. He also appeared in Columbia two-reel comedies with The Three Stooges, including Fling in the Ring and A Merry Mix Up, and had television roles on shows such as I Love Lucy and The Virginian.

Sully landed his first major role in 1941 at Monogram Pictures, a budget studio known for giving ambitious actors chances. In the Frankie Darro campus comedy Let's Go Collegiate, he was a dumb truck driver recruited to pose as a star athlete.
