Plot summary
Brothers Joseph and Rusty Panello are traveling west, having heard that gold can be picked up off the ground. At the railroad station they meet S. Quentin Quale, a confidence man who is ten dollars short of a ticket and who tries to swindle them; the pair, con men themselves, take his money instead. In the West the brothers befriend Dan Wilson, an old prospector whose claim, Dead Man's Gulch, holds no gold. They give him the ten dollars they have left so he can start over, and he insists on handing them the deed as security. Wilson does not know that Terry Turner, son of his longtime rival, has gone to New York to persuade the railroad to buy the gulch, which would make whoever holds the deed rich.

- During one of Go West's musical numbers, Chico Marx plays the piano and rolls an orange on the keys in sync with the melody.
- As with A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races, the Marx Brothers played key comedy scenes from Go West live onstage on a pre-filming tour. The Go West tour was much shorter than the earlier ones, lasting three weeks.
- A theatrical poster for Go West appears on the cover of Elton John's 1973 album Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, placed there as a homage to Groucho Marx.
