Plot summary
After an earthquake kills her parents in India, ten-year-old Mary Lennox is sent to Misselthwaite Manor, her uncle's house on the Yorkshire moors. Lord Archibald Craven still mourns his wife Lilias, who died ten years earlier, and he leaves his niece in the care of the housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock. Neglected by her parents and unable to cry, Mary is left largely on her own. She hears weeping somewhere in the house, and Mrs. Medlock sends her out to the grounds whenever it begins. There Mary comes upon a walled garden, locked since her aunt's death, and finds the key that opens it. She also meets Dickon, Martha the housemaid's brother, who is good with animals. The two begin clearing the garden.
