Desmond Barrit
Biography
Desmond Barrit was a British actor who worked mostly in the theater. Born in Morriston, near Swansea, he came to acting late, after accounting and amateur theater, and took an Equity card in the mid-1970s, when he changed his name. An early screen part was Humpty Dumpty in Alice Through the Looking Glass (1998). He played Shylock in The Merchant of Venice at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2003 and Hector in The History Boys at Wyndham's Theatre in 2007, and in 2004 he took the part of Pseudolus at the Royal National Theatre in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a production nominated for the 2005 Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production. He also appeared in the television series Midsomer Murders and took over the Wizard in the West End production of Wicked in 2008, returning to it in 2011 and leaving in 2012. He died in 2026.
