Allan Melvin

Allan Melvin was an American actor and impressionist who appeared in hundreds of TV episodes between the 1950s and the early 1990s, often in recurring parts. Born in Kansas City, he worked in the sound effects department at NBC Radio and performed a nightclub act before landing on Broadway in Stalag 17, which led to his television break as Corporal Steve Henshaw on The Phil Silvers Show. He often played slightly loud, friendly second bananas and tough guys. In the 1960s he was a guest on The Andy Griffith Show eight times and played Staff Sgt. Charlie Hacker on Gomer Pyle, USMC. He was best remembered as Sam Franklin, Alice's boyfriend on The Brady Bunch, and as Barney Hefner on All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place. He also voiced Magilla Gorilla, Drooper on The Banana Splits and Tyrone in The Secret Lives of Waldo Kitty, and Scooby-Doo in Arabian Nights (1994) was his final voice work.
