Plot summary
Abraham Lincoln spends his childhood in Indiana, where his father Thomas and mother Nancy work at the plantation of Jack Barts. He becomes friends with William Johnson and steps in when a slaver beats the boy, and the Lincolns lose their jobs as a result. That night Abraham sees Barts enter their home, and his mother sickens and dies within a day. Years afterward he finds Barts at the docks and discovers that the man is a vampire. Henry Sturges rescues him and offers to teach him to hunt vampires with a felling axe. Sturges tells him that the vampires of the United States descend from Adam, who owns a plantation in New Orleans, and that his sister is Vadoma; silver is their undoing. After ten years of training, Lincoln settles in Springfield, Illinois, and meets Mary Todd.
