Plot summary
In Ipswich, Massachusetts, Pogue Parry, Reid Garwin, Tyler Simms and Caleb Danvers attend Spenser Academy, where the four are known as the Sons of Ipswich, descendants of colonial witch families. Magic shows itself on a witch's thirteenth birthday and builds until an ascension at eighteen strengthens it greatly. Drawing on it is addictive, and too much of it brings rapid aging, madness and an early grave. At a bonfire the Sons meet two students new to the school, Sarah Wenham and Chase Collins, and Caleb and Sarah grow close. After a body turns up near the campus, disturbing occurrences follow, with Sarah and Kate Tunney, Pogue's girlfriend, the main targets.
