Plot summary
In 1986, Scott McKenzie teaches history and is a devoted fan of the gunslingers of the Old West. A year earlier his wife and son were killed when a drunk driver fleeing the police struck their car. With his friend General Joe Brodsky, he attends an auction of frontier memorabilia, where the two agree to bid together on two steamer trunks and divide what is inside. The trunks go their way. Going through them, McKenzie finds a photograph of a saloon shooting and, enhancing it, spots a man in the background carrying a .357 Magnum, a handgun of the 1980s, though testing shows the picture is at least a hundred years old. Convinced the man is a time traveler, he writes up his findings. Georgia Crawford then comes to him, saying she has been working on similar ideas.
