Plot summary
Letty Mason travels west by train from Virginia to Sweetwater, Texas, to stay at the ranch of her cousin Beverly. The wind blows the whole way, and a cattle buyer, Wirt Roddy, tells her it has a habit of driving women mad. Neighbors Lige Hightower and the older Sourdough, who live fifteen miles off, collect her and drive her through sand to the ranch. Beverly is happy to see her. His wife Cora is not, and her welcome is cold.

- The Wind was released with a happy ending that replaced the original one against the wishes of both its star, Lillian Gish, and its director, Victor Sjöström.
- Lillian Gish came up with the idea of adapting the novel and got Irving Thalberg's approval; after seeing Lars Hanson in a Swedish film with Greta Garbo she wanted him as her leading man, and she chose Victor Sjöström to direct.
- The Wind was the last silent film to star Lillian Gish, one of the last films Victor Sjöström directed in America, and the last major silent film released by MGM.
