Plot summary
In 1866, with the Civil War over, two families live as neighbors in the Texas countryside, each grieving its losses. The McCluskeys lost a son and their whole cattle herd to the fighting. The Rileys lost Mary, a wife and mother, to illness, and they get by on the pelts of the animals they trap. Randolph McCluskey's family has been taking those trapped animals. Wade Riley, the Riley children's uncle, comes home from the war hoping for quiet after what he has seen. When he learns what has been happening to the family's traps, he sets out to stop it, and the dispute between the two households grows.
