George Mitchell
Biography
George Mitchell was an American actor whose career in film, television, and Broadway lasted from 1935 to 1971. Born in Larchmont, New York, he was often cast in Hollywood as a loathsome figure who broke the law. His film appearances included a bartender in 3:10 to Yuma (1957), Uncle Lije Hawks in The Wild and the Innocent (1959), Harry Sperling in Kid Galahad (1962), Monsignor Ryan in The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), and Jake Kiner in The Learning Tree (1969). He played a cranky town drunk who survived the deadly microbe in The Andromeda Strain (1971) and a truck driver at an accident in Two-Lane Blacktop (1971). On television he worked in Golden Age dramas and westerns, and he originated Matthew Morgan on Dark Shadows. His Broadway credits included John Willard in The Crucible in 1953 and Chief Joseph in Indians in 1969 and 1970.
