Plot summary
A gravedigger earns his living by burying the dead of an unnamed war, and when he finds a boy alone in the desert he takes the orphan in and raises him. The two of them travel on together. Once the fighting ends, burials grow few and business is slow. The boy, now grown, decides to make the work himself and shoots people so that there are graves to dig. He argues for one big robbery at a bank to change their fortunes, and the gravedigger refuses. Both of them hold to a plan for a grand funeral parlor and cemetery.
