Zayn Malik
Biography
Zayn Malik is an English singer who came to prominence on The X Factor in 2010, where the judges placed him in a new group that became One Direction, one of the best-selling boy bands. He left the band in 2015 and signed a solo deal with RCA Records. His debut album, Mind of Mine (2016), and its single Pillowtalk made him the first British male solo act to top both the UK and US charts with a debut album and single. Later records are Icarus Falls (2018), Nobody Is Listening (2021), Room Under the Stairs (2024), and Konnakol (2026). He has won an American Music Award and an MTV Video Music Award, and he is the only artist to have taken Billboard's New Artist of the Year honor twice, once with One Direction and once on his own. He voiced characters in the animated film 10 Lives (2024) and served as its executive music producer.

A first
Malik's first single, "Pillowtalk," entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at number one. It was the 25th song to do so, and he became the first UK artist to reach number one on that chart with a debut single.
Behind the award
Malik has received the Billboard Music Award for New Artist of the Year two times, the only artist to do so. He won it in 2013 with One Direction and again in 2017 on his own.
Big break
Zayn Malik was cut before bootcamp's final round, but judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell put him together with other contestants to create a new act for the rest of the show, the boy band One Direction.
First role
A choir leader who liked his voice urged Malik to try out, so in 2010 the 17-year-old went to Manchester and auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor.
Languages
In 2019, Malik covered "A Whole New World" with Zhavia Ward for the soundtrack of that year's Aladdin remake. A bilingual English and Spanish take, "Un Mundo Ideal", with Becky G, arrived on 17 May, and he did a full Spanish version with Aitana.
A change of course
On 29 August 2024, a Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel tournament live-stream revealed that Malik was the celebrity Duelist known by the moniker Nocturne.
