Biography

Thomas Gottschalk, born in Bamberg in 1950, is a German entertainer and television host who also worked in radio. He started as a freelancer for Bavarian Broadcasting's youth program in 1971, became a news anchor in 1973, and gained popularity hosting Pop nach acht. In 1977 he began hosting Telespiele, which moved to the national ARD channel in 1980. He hosted Na sowas from 1982 to 1987 and won a Goldene Kamera in 1985. His best-known role is as host of Wetten, dass..?, which he took over in 1987 and hosted for many years, with an interruption in the early 1990s. He also acted in German comedies with Mike Krüger and in the films Trabbi goes to Hollywood (1991), Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), and Zookeeper (2011). His awards include a Telestar in 1987 and a Rose d'Or in 2005.

Gottschalk got his role in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit because lead actress Whoopi Goldberg lost a bet on his game show Wetten, dass..?, and he played Father Wolfgang, a sausage-obsessed German cook.
Behind the award
A dispute with the publisher Burda led Gottschalk to give back all three of his Bambi awards in 1988. In 2001, he accepted a "Bambi of honor" instead.
