Plot summary
Stone Cold Steve Austin holds the WWF Championship and The Undertaker wants it. The Undertaker had abducted Stephanie McMahon, daughter of chairman Vince McMahon, and asked for control of the WWF in return; Austin brought her back, which deepened their quarrel. The title match is set with Shane McMahon, an ally of The Undertaker, and Vince McMahon as guest referees. The Rock carries an arm injury from Triple H throwing him off the stage, and Shane McMahon rules that he cannot wear his cast in their match. Kane and X-Pac defend the tag team titles against Mark Henry and D'Lo Brown, Al Snow defends the hardcore title against Hardcore Holly, and The Union meets the Corporate Ministry in an eight-man elimination match.

SPOILER
Wrestling as the Blue Blazer, Owen Hart was to descend from the arena rafters into the ring on a harness. The entrance had been tested in November 1998 with a different harness configuration, but at Over the Edge a cable disengaged from his safety vest and he fell about 90 ft.- Three weeks later, Owen Hart's widow, children and parents sued the WWF for his death, claiming the dangerous stunt was poorly planned and the harness system defective. The case ran for one-and-a-half years before the WWF settled on November 2, 2000, paying the family US$18 million.
- Tributes to Hart were held the next day on WWF Raw is War in St. Louis and on WCW Monday Nitro in Greenville, South Carolina; the WWF show was called Raw is Owen, where all storylines were stopped and wrestlers chose whether to wrestle.
- After Hart's death the WWF canceled the pay-per-view encore and four live events in Canada plus one in Illinois. Over the Edge was never officially released on VHS or DVD, and the event was discontinued, its pay-per-view slot replaced by Judgment Day in 2000.
