Plot summary

Creatures called breakers come up through an opening in the ground known as the stitch. A scratch or a bite from one turns a man into a hybrid, so few men are left, and the women who remain take up arms against them. The breakers are large and many-legged; bullets only slow them, and a sword is needed to take off a head. A father tells his daughter Willa stories of that war, in which her mother commands soldiers, and after breakers attack their village the two of them escape by boat to a remote island. There he teaches Willa to survive on her own and prepares her for the battles he expects.
