Plot summary
Jonas Taylor, a rescue diver, is aboard a damaged nuclear submarine whose hull an unidentified creature is ramming. He gets part of the crew out and flees, leaving two of them trapped; Dr. Heller, a fellow survivor, denounces him as psychotic. Five years on, billionaire Jack Morris funds Mana One, an underwater research facility, where Dr. Minway Zhang and his daughter Suyin, an oceanographer, run a mission into a deeper part of the Mariana Trench, below a thermocline of hydrogen sulfide that had hidden it. Toshi, "The Wall" and Jonas' ex-wife Lori pilot the submersible, and something large attacks and traps them. Zhang and operations manager James "Mac" Mackreides find Jonas in Thailand, where he lives as a loner. Suyin attempts the rescue herself and a giant squid attacks her; an enormous shark kills the squid.

- New Line Cinema developed The Meg in 2005 with a $75 million budget and a summer 2006 release planned, attaching Jan de Bont as director, Guillermo del Toro as producer and Shane Salerno as writer, but canceled the project over budget concerns.
- Disney's Hollywood Pictures bought the novel's rights in 1996; after Tom Wheeler's script and then Jeffrey Boam's rewrite were both rejected, the project stalled by 1999 and the rights reverted to author Steve Alten.
- Eli Roth was reported to be in talks to direct when the film moved forward at Warner Bros. in 2015, but he was replaced by Jon Turteltaub in early 2016 due to creative differences.
- The Meg's $45.4 million US debut was the best solo opening of Jason Statham's career and of director Jon Turteltaub's.
