Plot summary
Fifteen years ago, creatures erupted from mines and fissures around the world and attacked for a single day, an event survivors named the Day of Reckoning. Governments sealed the deep fissures and set up stations to monitor them. Now dead fish are washing ashore, birds are migrating, and a lunar eclipse is due on Saturday. David is a chief of maintenance; his ex-wife Laura teaches high school, their son Tyler is a student with a girlfriend, and Corporal Garrett Jensen, who survived the first event, guards one of the fissures. David's Uncle Ted calls before dawn to warn that the creatures are rising again and that the family must reach his underground bunker in Barstow by noon.
