Plot summary
The Woodstock Music and Art Festival takes place in August 1969 near Bethel, New York, and it runs from the first preparations through the cleanup. Half a million people arrive and an impromptu city forms on the grounds. The fences collapse under the unexpected hordes, and National Guard helicopters bring food and medical assistance to the crowd. Naked fans slide in the mud, and drug use by performers is shown. Concert footage of the bands on stage is mixed with split-screen montages and with portraits of the concertgoers. Interviews with local townsfolk and with young people from the counterculture are woven through the music of the three days.
