Biography

John Entwistle was an English singer, songwriter and musician who played bass guitar for the rock band the Who. Born in 1944 and raised in Chiswick, he was the only member of the group to have had formal musical training, starting on piano and later taking up trumpet and French horn before switching to bass. He helped bring Pete Townshend into the band, played bass and sang backing and occasional lead vocals, and wrote songs such as Boris the Spider and My Wife. In 1971 he became the first member of the Who to release a solo album, Smash Your Head Against the Wall, and his best-selling solo record was Too Late the Hero (1981). The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him in 1990 as a member of the Who, and Rolling Stone readers voted him the greatest bass guitarist in 2011.

  1. Behind the camera

For the Who's fourth studio album Tommy, released in 1969, Entwistle wrote "Cousin Kevin" and "Fiddle About" because Townshend had asked him to write "nasty songs" that Townshend felt uncomfortable with.

  2. About the name

Entwistle earned the nickname "the Ox" from his strong constitution and his apparent capacity to "eat, drink or do more than the rest of them". He later also became known as "Thunderfingers".

  3. A first

Entwistle was the band member who first wore a Union Jack waistcoat. That garment went on to become one of Townshend's signature pieces of clothing.

  4. Behind the camera

Entwistle designed the cover art for the Who's seventh studio album, The Who by Numbers, released in 1975. In a 1996 interview he said it cost 30 pounds to create, while Pete Townshend's Quadrophenia cover cost 16,000 pounds.

  5. A first

In 1984, Entwistle recorded an instructional video for Hot Licks Video, the company owned by Arlen Roth. He was among the first artists besides Roth to do so.
