Plot summary

Patricia Field, an Emmy Award-winning stylist, has over several decades given hope to people society frowned upon: drag queens, club kids, gay teenagers, transsexuals and butch-dykes who needed to escape hometowns where nobody understood them. In New York they form a close-knit, unconventional family that has changed music and fashion for the world more than once. Her store is credited with fashion trends including the poly shoe, the girdle skirt and the strapless bra, and she helped the careers of Keith Haring, Jean Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Customers run from John Kennedy Jr. to Farrah Fawcett and Cher. A Toronto filmmaker spent a decade among the group to tell their story and came to be part of the family.
