Biography
Jimi Hendrix was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter who began playing guitar at fifteen and served briefly in the Army before working the Chitlin' Circuit as a backing musician for the Isley Brothers, Little Richard and Curtis Knight. After moving to England in 1966, he formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell and scored UK top-ten hits with Hey Joe and Purple Haze, plus The Wind Cries Mary. His US breakthrough came at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Electric Ladyland, his third and final studio album, appeared in 1968; it became his most successful release and the only one of his albums to top the US Billboard 200. He was the headline act at Woodstock in 1969 and at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. In 1992, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him as a member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He died in 1970.

Own stunts
Hendrix saw Butch Snipes play guitar with his teeth in Seattle, and Alphonso "Baby Boo" Young also did the gimmick. Not to be upstaged, Hendrix learned to play that way too.
First role
Hendrix played his first gig with a band that had no name, in the Jaffe Room at Seattle's Temple De Hirsch. The group fired him between sets because he showed off.
A first
In November 1966, during the Jimi Hendrix Experience's first gigs in Germany at Munich's Big Apple club, Hendrix panicked while trying to get away from a frenzied crowd that had dragged him off the stage, and he smashed his guitar on stage for the first time.
About the name
Hendrix was persuaded by his manager to spell his first name Jimi instead of Jimmy, a change made because the new version seemed more exotic.
Big break
In February 1964, Hendrix took first prize at an amateur contest held at the Apollo Theater. He then performed around Harlem clubs and joined various bands, and Ronnie Isley gave him an audition.
