Joan Baez

Biography

Joan Baez is an American singer-songwriter and musician who began recording in 1960 and found success quickly. Her first three records all went gold. Though she wrote some of her own material, she became known for interpreting songs by other writers, and she helped bring Bob Dylan's early work to a wider audience. Her recordings include Diamonds & Rust, There but for Fortune, and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. At the 1969 Woodstock Festival she sang fourteen songs, an appearance captured in the documentary Woodstock (1970). Whistle Down the Wind, one of her later albums, earned a Grammy nomination. In 2007 she received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2017 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted her. She retired from touring in 2019.

About the name
Baez considered changing her performing name to Rachel Sandperl or Maria before her first concert at Club 47, but decided against it because she feared people would think she was changing her last name for being Spanish.
Big break
Baez's performance at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival with Bob Gibson led to her signing with Vanguard Records the next year, even though Columbia Records tried to sign her first.
A role that slipped away
Baez turned down an offer to perform at the Woodstock 50 festival in 2019, saying it was too complicated to get involved in and that her instincts told her no.
Languages
Baez sang "El Preso Numero Nueve" entirely in Spanish on an album, and in 1974 she re-recorded the song for Gracias a la Vida, a Spanish-language album of hers.
