Arlo Guthrie
Biography
Arlo Guthrie is an American folk singer-songwriter and storyteller who carries on the musical tradition of his father, Woody Guthrie. Born in Coney Island, Brooklyn, he first gained attention after the long talking blues Alice's Restaurant Massacree earned him a recording contract and became a Thanksgiving radio staple. He performed at the Newport Folk Festival in 1967 and at Woodstock, and his acting credits include playing himself in the film Alice's Restaurant (1969), appearing in the concert documentary Woodstock (1970), taking a dramatic part in Roadside Prophets (1992), and appearing in The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack (2000). He reached the top 40 only with his version of Steve Goodman's City of New Orleans, and Massachusetts became the state's official folk song. His 1976 album Amigo received a five-star rating from Rolling Stone, and he received the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience award in 1992.
