Plot summary
Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, wants the empire to adopt progressive policies, and the question sets him against his father, Emperor Franz Joseph I, and his mother, Empress Elisabeth. He believes he was born into the wrong age, in a country that sees no need for social change. A popular revolt breaks out in Hungary, and Rudolf asks his father to tolerate it, and is refused. Vienna also receives a visit from the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII of Britain, whose stay brings comic relief. Rudolf's marriage to Princess Stéphanie brings him no happiness, and he turns to Baroness Maria Vetsera.
