Plot summary
The duke grants Chrysagon de la Cruex a Flemish village to rule and protect, with orders to keep the people's goodwill. He and his men beat off a Frisian raid, and the raiders leave behind a boy who hides who he is. Chrysagon takes Bronwyn from the men who harass her and comes to love her. Odins, the village chief, asks permission for Bronwyn to marry his son Marc, to whom she has been promised since childhood. Chrysagon consents, then regrets it. His brother Draco has the priest propose that Chrysagon claim droit du seigneur, an old pagan right, on Bronwyn's wedding night.
