Plot summary
After her mother Bobbi dies of cancer, Cheryl Strayed sinks into depression and numbs herself with heroin and sex with strangers. Her marriage falls apart, and an abortion makes her determined to change. With no hiking experience, she starts a solo trek on the Pacific Crest Trail in the Mojave Desert, carrying an overstuffed backpack she calls Monster. On the first night, she realizes her stove fuel is wrong, so she has no hot food. She manages on cold meals for several days until a farmer named Frank welcomes her into his home for a shower, a cooked dinner, and help getting the correct fuel the next morning.

- Reese Witherspoon called Wild the hardest movie she had ever made: she ran up a hill with a 45-pound backpack, was told it did not look heavy enough, then ran it nine or ten times wearing a 65-pound pack, and the crew never broke for lunch in the remote locations.
- After Wild was released, the Bridge of the Gods in Oregon, where Cheryl Strayed's journey ends in the film, drew so much extra traffic that the toll for crossing it went up.
