Plot summary
Ramsay MacKay drives a Wells & Fargo mail and freight wagon in the early 1840s. Hurrying a load of fresh oysters to Buffalo, New York, he stops long enough to pick up Justine Pryor and her mother, whose carriage has broken down, and the ride into town is rough. He arrives in time for Henry Wells to show some bankers how quick the service is. Wells sends MacKay to St. Louis to open a branch office, which suits him, since the Pryors live there. He and Justine court, over her mother's objections and those of Talbot Carter, her more socially prominent suitor. In 1846 Wells sends him west to open trails to California, with the frontiersman Hank York and Hank's Pawnee companion.
