Plot summary
Lincoln Rhyme, the department's leading forensics expert, is left quadriplegic and bed-bound by an accident, with movement only in his head and one finger. Rookie patrol officer Amelia Donaghy finds a mutilated body at a Civil War-era railroad bed in Manhattan and preserves the scene. Objects left there look like clues, and Rhyme decides the scene was staged; her instincts lead him to bring her into the case. A video and audio link makes her his eyes and legs at crime scenes while he directs the work from his bedroom. A man posing as a taxi driver abducts Alan and Lindsay Rubin, a married couple. Thelma, Rhyme's nurse, assists him at home.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Bone Collector (1999)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The role of Lincoln Rhyme was written with Al Pacino in mind, since Bregman had produced Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface and Carlito's Way, but Pacino was unavailable filming The Insider; the studio suggested Harrison Ford and Sean Connery before Noyce cast Denzel Washington.
- Noyce made a deal with the studio: if the production went over budget he would pay the difference out of his own pocket, and if it came in under budget he would get to keep half.
- In preparation for his role as a quadriplegic, Washington met quadriplegics including Christopher Reeve, and a police officer who had been paralysed by a gunshot wound.
SPOILER
The killer turns out to be Richard Thompson, the medical technician in charge of Rhyme's equipment, whose real name is Marcus Andrews: a former forensics expert convicted after an article by Rhyme exposed him for planting evidence that wrongfully imprisoned six people, one of whom hanged himself.- For the role of Amelia Donaghy, both Demi Moore and Nicole Kidman were considered before Angelina Jolie was cast in the part.
