Plot summary
A masked crew under Dalton Russell takes control of a bank in Manhattan, locking the doors and holding the customers and employees inside. The robbers split the hostages into groups and dress them in coveralls and masks like their own. Police surround the building, and Detective Keith Frazier, facing corruption charges, runs the negotiations with his partner, Detective Bill Mitchell. The bank's founder, Arthur Case, asks the fixer Madeleine White to keep the contents of his safe deposit box out of the robbers' hands. The robbers work without hurry, ask for food, and the police send in pizzas with listening devices hidden in the boxes. Captain John Darius commands the Emergency Services Unit outside.

- Owen nearly turned down the role because of the character's disguise of a hood, mask and sunglasses, saying that a lot of acting is through intent and intent is shown through the eyes. He accepted after further discussing the part with Lee, and the script was revised to include scenes in which Owen's face could be shown.
- Lee first approached Washington and gave him the chance to play either Frazier or Dalton Russell. Washington turned down the latter, citing concerns over the character's disguise, and cited his Broadway performance as Brutus in Julius Caesar as inspiration, thinking of Frazier as Brutus goes to Brooklyn.
- Lee confirmed that he could not secure funding for a sequel, saying that Inside Man was his most successful film but they could not get the sequel made: one thing Hollywood does well is sequels, yet the film is not getting made and they tried many times.
- Marcia Jean Kurtz plays Miriam Douglas and reprises her role as Miriam from Dog Day Afternoon (1975), where she was also depicted as a hostage, while Lionel Pina, a pizza delivery man in that film, reappears here as one of the policemen delivering pizzas to the bank.
- Location scouting revealed a former Wall Street bank at 20 Exchange Place that had been closed down and repurposed as a cigar bar; the building stood in for the fictional Manhattan Trust Bank branch where the bank heist occurs.
- Inside Man held the record for the highest opening weekend gross for a film starring Denzel Washington, surpassing Man on Fire (2004), which had debuted with $22.7 million on its first weekend.
- When Lee saw how violent the animated sequence was, he improvised a subtitle line for it. Its original running time was 60 seconds, and Lee cut it to 30, feeling that a shorter length would make more of an impact.
