Plot summary
Bridget Ertz flies to the town where she grew up after her mother, Ruth, walks out of the house during a Christmas Eve blizzard. Ruth has Alzheimer's, and Nicky, Bridget's brother, has found a place for her at an assisted care facility in Chicago. He wants Bridget's help in persuading their father, Norbert, to accept it, while Norbert is certain that he alone can give Ruth the care she needs. Nicky turns to Bridget for support, though her years away from her parents make the subject hard for her to raise. Bridget has troubles of her own as well: she and her husband Eddie have never been close, and their daughter Emma has stopped attending college because of anxiety.
