October brings Netflix in the United States a mixed bag of studio films. The month opens with a run of arrivals on the same day, 1 October, and the titles in that batch have little in common beyond the date. Some travel widely, and others stay close to a handful of people. The tone shifts a good deal from one arrival to the next, and the month has room for both grand-scale adventure and close-up family drama. The week thins out after that. What They Had arrives on 3 October, a drama about a family and a mother with Alzheimer's, and The Boogeyman follows on 5 October with a creature that finds its way into a house.
Films are ranked by the date they are due to arrive, and only those with an announced Netflix date in the United States inside October qualify. An announced date can still move.
M. Night Shyamalan directs The Sixth Sense, on 1 October, with Bruce Willis as a child psychologist and Haley Joel Osment as the boy he takes on, a nine-year-old who will not say what is troubling him. David Frankel's The Devil Wears Prada, the same day, has Anne Hathaway as an assistant to Meryl Streep's magazine editor, a graduate who wants to be a journalist and knows nothing about fashion. James Gray looks further out with Ad Astra, also 1 October, and Brad Pitt plays the astronaut sent to Mars to reach a father who led a mission near Neptune. Tommy Lee Jones and Liv Tyler also star.
