Plot summary
Gianni, Antonio and Nicola fight as partisans and come out of the war as brothers. Antonio becomes a nurse at a hospital in Rome and falls in love with Luciana. Gianni becomes an assistant in the law firm of La Rosa, who is standing for the Socialist Party in the deputy elections. Nicola teaches in a small town high school, marries Gabriella and has a son, Tommasino; a quarrel with his superior over Bicycle Thieves costs him the job, and he leaves his wife and child and takes his books to Rome to look for Antonio. Three years after the war, Antonio is lunching with Luciana when Gianni happens to pass by. Antonio, delighted, recalls the resistance days, while Luciana and Gianni are drawn to each other and Antonio notices nothing.
