Plot summary
Mario Cioni comes from the Tuscan underclass, and building work is how he gets by; Enrico Berlinguer, who led the Italian Communist Party at the time, is the man he holds above all others. He is very attached to his mother, a closeness his friends joke about. The woman he loves is sophisticated and hates poetry, and Mario, a poet, means to win her with his verses, with his mother ready to lend a hand. A card game with Bozzone goes wrong and leaves him with a gambling debt he cannot settle. Bozzone tells him what he wants instead of the money he owes: a night with Mario's mother.
