Plot summary
A young French electrician named Lafayette lives on his own in a basement in a darkly surreal New York City where rats and a few eccentrics remain. He works at a wax museum of Roman Empire scenes owned by Andreas Flaxman, where the sculptor Luigi Nocello maintains the displays. Lafayette also serves as a lighting technician for a feminist theater group, where the actress Angelica is drawn to him. At the Battery Park City construction site beside the Hudson River, he encounters Luigi and several eccentrics who come upon an abandoned baby chimpanzee in a giant King Kong sculpture's palm. Lafayette chooses to raise the animal, and Flaxman warns that keeping it will cost him his freedom.
